Roof leaking at night: what to do until a roofer gets there
A leak at night feels urgent because it is. Most of what helps happens inside the building, and the most important rule is to stay off the roof.

First minutes: safety
Water and electricity are the first danger. If water is dripping from or near a light fixture, stay away from it and do not switch it on. If the electrical panel is dry and you can reach it safely, switch off the circuit for that area; if not, leave it and keep people away.
A ceiling that bulges downward is holding water, and water is heavy. Keep people and pets out from under it.
Contain the water
Move furniture, rugs, electronics and anything valuable out from under the leak. Put buckets or pots under drips, with towels around them, and empty them before they overflow. Plastic sheeting over furniture that cannot be moved helps.
If a bulging ceiling is safe to reach from a sturdy step, a small hole at its lowest point over a bucket lets the water out in a controlled way instead of all at once when the ceiling fails. If you are unsure, do not do it; keep clear and wait.
Why not to go up on the roof
Wet membrane is slick, flat roofs often have low parapets or no guardrail at all, and darkness hides edges, skylights and hatches. Tarping a pitched roof means ladder work at the roof edge, which is dangerous in daylight and much worse at night.
Heavy rain also changes what you would find. When the remnants of Ida brought a record 3.15 inches of rain in one hour to Central Park in 2021, roofs with partly blocked drains filled faster than they could empty. On a flooded roof, the drain and the opening you are looking for are under water.
Document it for insurance
Take photos and video of the ceiling, the water, and any damaged belongings, with the time visible if your phone records it. Keep damaged items rather than throwing them out, and keep receipts for towels, buckets, fans and emergency work.
Insurers generally expect owners to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, which is what the steps above are. Call your insurer as soon as it is practical and ask how they want the claim documented.
What happens when the roofer arrives
The first job is making the roof safe and stopping the water: clearing blocked drains, sealing the entry point with a temporary patch or cover, and fastening anything loose. The damage is photographed for you and your insurer.
The permanent repair comes after, once the roof is dry and materials are matched. A temporary seal is meant to hold for days, not a season, so book the permanent repair promptly.
